Slow Flowers: Why Sourcing Local Blooms is a Total Game-Changer
Let’s talk about slow flowers—aka, locally grown blooms that support small farms, reduce your carbon footprint, and bring allll the fresh, seasonal magic to your designs. If you’re a florist who hasn’t jumped on the local flower train yet, this might just be your sign! Sourcing flowers from nearby farms isn’t just a trend—it’s a movement that’s all about sustainability, community, and insanely gorgeous, unique blooms that imported flowers just can’t compete with. Hampton Roads has more than 15 flower farms in our area! From country farming to urban gardens we have so much to choose from locally!
First off, local flowers = fresher, longer-lasting, and way more interesting than mass-produced imports. Since they don’t have to survive a long trip across the globe, they’re harvested at peak beauty and can include stunning varieties you won’t find at traditional wholesalers. Plus, when you buy from local growers, you’re supporting small businesses and hardworking farmers who pour their hearts into every stem. It’s a win-win—you get top-quality flowers, and they get the support they need to keep doing what they love.
I love supporting during out growing season. But what do i do in the winter?! I prioritize ordering from our small wholesalers. They are family owned businesses who source imported florals during the cold months. I am adamant if we are not able to support the farmers, we will support another local family business!
Beyond the beauty, sourcing slow flowers is a statement. It tells your clients that you care about the environment, ethical sourcing, and investing in your community. Brides and event clients LOVE a good sustainability story, and trust me, they’ll remember (and rave about) a florist who prioritizes local blooms as much as possible. So, next time you’re planning an event, drop me a line! You’ll be amazed at the difference, and your clients (and the planet) will thank you!
